ok, so here's what's been up with me

- Days have been busy and I have no internet at school. This is a much bigger problem than the “at risk” “difficult” students I work with on a daily basis.

-I work for a nonprofit agency in their alternative school. There is a rock wall outside of my window and a koi pond outside of my door. These things are exactly as cool as they sound.

-I’m fucking exhausted.

-The kids are… the kids. My days are really no more or less frustrating than they were last year with mainstream (normal) students. Kids are kids. These kind of break my heart every day because they go home to nothing and that sucks.

- Schiver and I are still engaged :) and the wedding is becoming real. We have all the parts of our Save The Dates and just need the time to put them together… easier said than done.

- In two weeks I will be an official one job girl. Thank fuck. I’m not whining (ok. I’m whining, but it’s my fucking blog) but I’ve been working at least two jobs for three years now and I’m just soooo done with it.

- I miss you all, even those of you I don’t know for realsies, terribly.

- It’s hard to pick a favorite story from school so far so… I’ll give you both sides of what I see

Inspirational: Last week, my student L read aloud from Angela’s Ashes… in front of the whole class. Last year, she couldn’t read at all.

WTF: This is the hard one to pick… What to choose? My white student accusing me of being racist? The way these former inmate kids flipped out over cookies? My openly out student (go her, she rocks!) using her belt in an obscene way? My other student K who walks in to English class every day announcing “I’ve got a STIFFY!” Hmm… I think I’ll have to get back to you on that one.

“But to even things out, here is all my weird secret stuff. I have been sexually rejected by not one, but two guys who later went onto Clown College. I get super nervous whenever I hear a vacuum cleaner because when I was a kid, my mom would turn on the vacuum to drown out the sound of her and my dad fighting. Which is why I rarely vacuum my apartment, like, never. I have had three doughnuts so far today. Once in college, I pooped my pants a little bit at a Country Steaks all you can eat buffet and I didn’t leave until I finished my last plate of shrimp. A couple of months ago, I went on a date with my cousin. Wow…I am a mess. There is an 80% chance that in the next election I will tell all my friends I am voting for Barack Obama but I will secretly vote for John McCain. Here’s one, when I was a kid, I used to put on my fanciest nightgown and then I would mix orange soda and cream soda in a champagne glass and I would sit in the dark and watch The Love Boat. Holy Luke and Laura, Jonathan Jackson is coming back to GH!

He stopped playing Lucky (my all time fav character) back when I was in high school to pursue his Christian rock band and film roles (such as guest starring in the Boy Meets World where Topanga dates someone else, and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights). No lie, when he “died” on the show I wore black to school the next day.

Since his departure (and the reveal a few months later that Lucky was merely kidnapped and not dead) two others have played the role. While I heart the current Lucky to itty bitty pieces, I’m beyond thrilled to see that my boy will be back.

All that remains is a true re-uniting of LL2! squee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UK in the middle, US on the right. Ya know what? Who cares? It’s just a cover. The content is the same on the inside, and if a new cover makes young readers pick it up, there’s no badness in that!

I just worry… as far as difficulty and reading level goes, Wuthering Heights is light years ahead of Twilight. (I’m not saying that makes Twilight a bad book, just an easier read) Tweens picking up “Edward and Bella’s favorite book” will have a very tough time getting through it and may not have the support of a great English teacher to back it up. A failed attempt at understanding a work can put someone off it for a long time. Maybe I’m being a bit protective of my job…

Yeah… I’ve been missing for the last week, but I swear I have a good reason!

With about a day to spare in the summer, I finally found a teaching job for this year. So for the last week and a half I’ve been preparing for and welcoming three classes of Alternative Ed students to our friggin awesome facilities in Middletown, Pa.

What makes our school friggin awesome? Well, there’s the koi pond outside my classroom (inside, mind you) and the rock climbing wall that I can see from my window, but I think the coolest part is the high ropes course that occupies the other side of the converted barn that is our school. I haven’t tested the rafters and rope swing yet, but it looks like fun and the kids love it.

Alternative ed, for those of you who aren’t familiar, means that I’m working with kids who got kicked out of their regular high schools for any number of reasons. Most are on probation, many are in foster care. Some are incredibly angry. It’s challenging, and the rewards are often little moments shared with the kids willing to give you the time of day.

It’s teaching, and I love it, but it’s draining. The pay sucks, so I’ve been working pretty long days at my part-time tutoring gig to try to make up the difference.

But trust me, tumblr peeps, I still love you :)
